FERPA: Disclosures and Permissions

Under what conditions is prior consent not required to disclose information?

Schools may disclose, without consent, directory information unless a specific request has been made by the eligible student not to disclose directory information about them.

FERPA allows schools to disclose information from a student's education record without consent to the following parties or under the following conditions:

  • School officials with legitimate educational interest
  • Other schools to which a student is transferring
  • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes
  • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to the student
  • Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school
  • Accrediting organizations
  • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena
  • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies
  • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific state law

What information requires my permission prior to disclosure?

Under FERPA, a school may not generally disclose personally identifiable information (PII) from an eligible student's records unless the eligible student has provided written consent.

Students can find the Waiver to Release Educational Records on the Office of the University Registrar webpage. Students have the right to revoke consent that was previously given at any time by notifying the registrar in writing.
